I noticed today that Fedora finally put out an official update that 
fixed the broken lapack (before you had to manually download the 
development version from their server). For Fedora Core 4 it has been 
decided to begin moving less commonly used packages out of "core" (RH 
maintained) into "Extras" (community maintained) in order to reduce the 
size of the base install. Octave is one of the first victims, and I'm 
trying to get octave 2.1.69 into extras before FC4 is released. Any 
other users interested in lending a hand at maintaining octave and 
related packages for Fedora are welcome to contact me.
