I did not have any success with the --config command, probably because I
don't really know what I am doing with the command line, so I took out the
libatlas3gf-base and libatlas-base-dev packages, which un-installed both R
and Octave. Then I reinstalled octave 3.2.4 only, which along the
installation it included libatlas-dev, so I tried the linear algebra
functionality (eig(a)) and it was still crashing Octave, so I went back to
the package manager, took out libatlas-dev, which automatically re-installed
liblapack3gf, now the eig(a) as well as other Linear Algebra commands from
the statistics package which my octave programs depend on are working fine
like they used to.
Unfortunately, R is still un-installed on my system and I am afraid to
reinstall it so as to avoid the same problems I had.
