The issue was related to the "LD_*" definitions.
The solution for me to execute a script in Octave from Matlab is to use
the following code in Matlab:
cmd = 'octave --eval "SCRIPTNAME"';
pre = 'LD_LIBRARY_PATH=""; LD_FRAMEWORK_PATH="";
LD_FALLBACK_LIBRARY_PATH=""';
system (sprintf ('%s %s', pre, cmd));
