Going forward, I think, since all releases so far have been (AFAIK)
properly tagged.  It is not that important now, I think, but may be
more relevant when a version hit 'stable' and we later on want to go
back and make security fixes fix it.  Then I suppose we'll branch CVS
at that tag.
