Thanks. I've tried both and now get:

ImportError: 
/bmm/home/dc101/.python-eggs/python_igraph-0.5.1-py2.5-linux-x86_64.egg-tmp/igraph/core.so:
 undefined symbol: igraph_vector_destroy

So something is still not right.

Have you tried the following?

export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/home/your-username/igraph/lib
python
 >>> import igraph

Or if it does not help, then:

LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/home/your-username/igraph/lib python
 >>> import igraph

Or how about symlinking libigraph.so* to /usr/lib?
