I've tried several times without any success. I am currently using
msmtp with the following settings:

  (setq sendmail-program "msmtp"
        message-sendmail-envelope-from 'header
        send-mail-function 'mailclient-send-it
        message-send-mail-function 'message-send-mail-with-sendmail)

and config file ~/msmtprc.txt is:

account gmail
host smtp.gmail.com
auth on
tls on
tls_certcheck off
user pquessev@gmail.com
password xxxxx
