Hmm... okay.  I hadn't noticed that nuance before.

Looks reasonable,  however, one or both of the requiring and required 
macro will need to be m4_defun to get the m4_provide machinery (I forget
which, sorry).

Yes, but libtool-2.0 needs to be out sooner! :-p
