I'd say the natural way to get involved in the documentation 
writing and development is to first start off using the 
program. If you're not really interested in using it, it'll
be difficult to contribute. On the other hand, using a product
and trying to learn using the existing documentation is an 
excellent way to find out what needs to be done.
