In fact, I would like to remove as much non-musical stuff from .ly as
posible. As a simple example, the decision of whether or not to
produce MIDI should be made from the command line only.

Maybe we should just (make a short annoucement that Lily now has GNOME
output and uses PANGO to render fontsn and) ask on desktop-devel-list
or gtk-i18n-list.
