I guess, the dot first appeared in "|.", where it means "end the piece", 
just like
a dot is normally used to end a sentence. Then, it was in some sense 
logical
that ".|" means thick thin, if "|." means thin thick which then 
generalized into
".|." (but not completely, since you only get two thick lines, not a 
thin one inbetween).
