Me neither. The real culprit that causes applications over ssh to fail is a router in the path blocking all ICMP packets, I believe, rather than the small MTU setting itself, although I haven't finally proved this. Changing the MTU value is a just a work-around rather than a fix.
It was fortunate the small MTU size was in a router I have access to! Trevor
