It depends what you mean by "wrong".  You've been following the
printed instructions in our contributor's guide.  I'm not going to
call that "wrong".  You've been building lilypond, building
documentation, and sending good patches.  I'm not going to call
that "wrong".

However, the "out-of-build"
  mkdir -p build
  cd build
  ../configure
  make
steps can avoid a few potential problems, and it will allow us to
simplify some stuff if everybody does it.  I'd call that more
"right".
