Ah yes, I'm sure we already use one of these
Pattern-specific/Target-specific variables features in current Lily
makefiles, and this is what I thought about for such scoping, indeed.
So I think such a change in LilyPond build system (i.e. entirely or
mostly eliminate directory recursion) could be done after merging make/
and stepmake/stepmake/.
