An alternative, if you want to keep the barlines, is to 
use the same trick as in the example file
input/star-spangled-banner.ly, namely to redifine the LyricsVoice
context to include the Bar_engraver:

    ...
    \translator {
      \LyricsVoiceContext
      \consists "Bar_engraver"
    }
  }
}
