I face a similar problem, except that I have to deal with a continuous
flow of Finale files. It is not a one-time operation. I'm currently considering
writing a (or using an existing) MusicXML to LilyPond, and use Finale's
export mechanism, rather than spend time on a truly proprietary format.

It is true that MusicXML export is available in Finale 2005, I'm not
sure it applies to older versions.
