I'm having the same problem. I could install the first beta autopackages 
(around 2.5.30), but from 2.6.0, I get the same error.

I'm pretty sure it's a packaging bug of some kind: The autopackage contains a 
version of gs, which it should install if the installed version is too old.

I solved the problem by installing a third-party gs 8.50 package for ubuntu.

There is a number of build dependencies, but IIRC you can get everything you 
need from ubuntu.

(if not, you can either ask me again or get packages from debian.org)

Yes.

If you use the autopackage, it will be easy. If you build from sources, it 
will take some effort to make upgrading smooth.
