Sure, Ralph. I'll do some digging and try to figure out what makes lilypond-mode work in my installation.

In the meantime, check out:

http://tldp.org/HOWTO/Emacs-Beginner-HOWTO-3.html#ss3.1

if you haven't already, just for some background information on modes in Emacs.

Email me off-list if you make any progress. If I have a 'Eureka,' I'll do so as well.

Did what you said, as far as I could. Opened a .ly file, and got bounced. Opened the file again with the --debug-init option, and got:

Debugger entered--Lisp error: (invalid-function "/usr/local/lilypond/usr/share/emacs/site-lisp")
  ("/usr/local/lilypond/usr/share/emacs/site-lisp")
  (list ("/usr/local/lilypond/usr/share/emacs/site-lisp"))
(append (list ("/usr/local/lilypond/usr/share/emacs/site-lisp")) load-path)
  (setq load-path (append (list ...) load-path))
eval-buffer(#<buffer *load*> nil "/home/rpalmer/.emacs.d/init.el" nil t) ; Reading at buffer position 94 load-with-code-conversion("/home/rpalmer/.emacs.d/init.el" "/home/rpalmer/.emacs.d/init.el" t t)
  load("/home/rpalmer/.emacs.d/init" t t)
  #[nil "พ

I'm going to have to pack up for a while, but I want to keep trying to figure this out. Should we move the conversation off-list?

I copied the text from the Wikipedia site and pasted it into a new document: Sample.ly, and ran emacs against it, with the same results.

Ralph
