Incorrect Lilypond version

Hi all...

I've installed what I think should be Lilypond 2.12 every way I can dream
up, the installation messages say it's installing 2.12. but lilypond -v
still thinks it 2.10.33.

This is on a machine running Ubuntu 9.10.

To make me more confused, I've done (what I think is) the same thing on 2
other boxes, both of which are reporting the correct version.
