I'm looking to remove the system start *bar* (rather than the start brace or bracket).

So I tried changing your ...

        \alterBroken transparent #'(#t) SystemStartBrace

... to ...

        \alterBroken transparent #'(#t) SystemStartBar

... but it didn't seem to have much of an effect.
