Hi David,

Yes: use Lilypond’s automatic voicing:

        \new PianoStaff <<
            \new Staff = "upper" <<
                \new Voice = "first" { \voiceOne \pianoVoiceOne }
                \new Voice = "second" { \voiceTwo \pianoVoiceTwo }
            >>
            \new Staff = "lower" <<
                \clef bass
                \new Voice = "third" { \voiceOne \pianoVoiceThree }
                \new Voice = "fourth" { \voiceTwo \pianoVoiceFour }
            >>
        >>

This may also allow you to reduce or totally avoid the use of \stemUp and
\stemDown (which are extremely rare in my scores, despite my heavy use of
polyphony).

Hope this helps!
Kieren.
