Yes: use Lilypond’s automatic voicing:
\new PianoStaff <<
\new Staff = "upper" <<
\new Voice = "first" { \voiceOne \pianoVoiceOne }
\new Voice = "second" { \voiceTwo \pianoVoiceTwo }

\new Staff = "lower" <<
\clef bass
\new Voice = "third" { \voiceOne \pianoVoiceThree }
\new Voice = "fourth" { \voiceTwo \pianoVoiceFour }

This may also allow you to reduce or totally avoid the use of \stemUp and
\stemDown (which are extremely rare in my scores, despite my heavy use of
polyphony).
