The "Modern" series after which this is modeled combine a closed single
character shape with a horizontally leaded gray level by employing
vertical hairlines.  For the "offset-print until the plates wear down
and copy dozens of times" general target of note printing that's rather
out of style.  The typical engraving shapes are quite more blunt, like
Times Roman.
