lout database size

Hello All, Hello Jeff,

On several occasions, I noticed that for a given document, for
instance gibianq.lt (a lout source file of 126Kbytes producing a
report of about 48 pages) the data base file gibianq.ld is much bigger
(1389Kbytes) after a few (3 or 4) Lout runs. I don't have a big
bibliographical reference (with @Database @Reference { qgibref } where
my file qgibref.ld has 34 references in 8Kbytes), but I do have many
cross-references (for instance, @Cite and @NumberOf in @FootNote-s,
etc..).

I also noticed that lout processing time becomes (worse than)
quadratic. On my Pentium Pro 200 running Linux, the first two lout
runs take about 6 seconds, and the fourth takes 50 or more seconds.

I also noticed that the lout process eats sometimes (eg 15Mb) much
more memory that the whole document!

It seems to me that even with lots of cross-references lout processing
should'nt be quadratic in time & space... It should only requires 2 or
3 passes!

Any explanations or hints?
