Yes, they're there -- and curiously, are identical to the distribution
ones [certainly in the case of 'slides'].

Yes; the makefile differs only from the distribution one in the install
paths and the PDF_COMPRESSION settings.

Thanks for the help, but this doesn't look too good for my system. I
would have thought that a Debian 2.1 system was pretty "stock" in its
requirements... oh well.
