This is the problem of deciding where to place a subscript
relative to the thing it is a subscript of - not vertically,
for which there are reasonably simple rules, but horizontally,
where to do it properly you need to take into account the
outline of the subscript and the outline of the thing it is
a subscript of, not just their bounding boxes.

Fonts often come with kerning information, and Lout uses it,
but it only applies when the two things are from the same font
at the same size, and lie on the same baseline. At least two
of these three conditions do not apply when kerning subscripts.
