Follow-up Comment #7:

Certain implementations have (empty) __malloc_lock(), __malloc_unlock()
function external to the actual malloc for this purpose.

Looks cleaner to me than assuming a system actually has semaphores, some
bare-bone raw-API micro's simply don't have semaphores.

Not solving this case. Bye.
