Okay, I see why the u32_t now... level and mask, etc. 

I agree we shouldn't assume anything about architecture-specific
implementation layers. And I didn't mean to suggest anyone should be forced
into using types that are inefficient for their architecture. What I was
trying to say was I think that you should be able to use the native data type
together with my 'shortcut' to achieve your desired result.
