Follow-up Comment #55, task #14314 (project lwip): Re comment #45++: I think David's proposal could be implemented if you go the direct way from the RFC-API file to netif.c. You'd need to ensure you do this in tcpip_thread, but I don't see a real need to provide all these functions in netifapi (plus the code size overhead). Even for the functions existing now, it might be good enough to just somehow get your "core-related" part run in the correct thread and remove the new "netifapi_netif_*" functions...
