Thanks for bringing this to my attention. The configure script needed some changes for -debug-and-release, which are now in the development repo:

You can get the changes with the usual "hg pull -u".

but generates another bug (not present in the last beta1), when I try to compile with svg suport:

Before we get too far with this, I should ask if you have looked at step 5b in the tutorial.

Yes, with that step and beta1 I had no problems compiling my release program but could not build debug libraries ;)
