Ehh? I just quickly browsed through the check-in and I can't see that 
extra flag in Protocol_T and the code to omit calling 
check_upd_socket()? Wasn't that in the original patch? Strange.. Anyway 
we should still fix check_upd_socket to send an empty packet to the 
server not one byte like we now do.
