The huge error messages now only occur when you actually bump into a
bug in monotone -- either some assertion failure triggers, so you get
a debugging log to help Graydon fix it, or there's somewhere that
thinks it's an assertion failure but is actually just a normal error
message, in which case the bug is that it's treating it like an
assertion failure :-). This looks like that latter case... timeouts
are a normal failure mode, so it should just turn into a normal error
message. Perhaps you could file a bug for that?
(I do think Graydon was talking about dumping that messy log into a
file, rather than the screen, which might be something you could
contribute if you're itching to help?)
