It has killed node id 2. The difference is, that the merger will have to track contents across node ids, but not aliveness.

Oh. Hrm. Have to think about that one. What happens if you delete both nodes 1 and 2, does that automatically delete node 3? It would be consistent if the answer was 'no', but some might find that surprising.
