sorry, but for me this doesn't install anything:

$ make install
make: *** No rule to make target `install'.  Stop.

And in Plugin/Makefile, it says at the top that
the plugin should be copied manually into the
correct plugin directory.

Maybe your gentoo ebuild copies the file to some
place after compiling?

That's because they actually copied the necessary
headers into their own source (probably from the
old NS4 Plugin SDK). I don't think that's the right
approach.

Btw, in the CVS version, the configure script is
now much cleverer when it tries to find the
mozilla include files. First it tries pkg-config, if
that doesn't work, it looks for mozilla-config,
and if that's not found you can still specify the
include directory manually using a configure flag.

I've also fixed any build issues related to
gcc-2.95.
