Another alternative would be to define a URI handler, in the way that 
iTunes does.

ie. http://myexperiment.org/foo/bar/quux/1 takes you to a page that says 
'This is a SCUFL workflow. Download it here over HTTP or wait/click to 
open it on your machine' which could just be a link to 
scufl://myexperiment.org/foo/bar/quux/1 - and you let client side 
developers handle that (ie. Taverna, Excel, etc)
