On second thought, when the user runs for example
'nano foo/bar/baz', and the directory foo/ does not
exist (and thus also foo/bar/ does not exist), it is
enough for nano to say that directory foo/bar/ does
not exist.  It is not necessary to climb up the tree
and find the first element that does not exist -- the
user will find that out soon enough when she tries to
make directory bar/.  Not climbing the tree will make
that part of the code much simpler.
