The attached patch solves https://savannah.gnu.org/bugs/?51040.
Changes where only made in:
  source file "files.c"
  function "do_writeout(bool exiting)"

Sorry for the late reply, but this is my first patch on Gnu Nano and I was not sure I would make it this far.
