I've done that in the upcoming patch set, in the now-third patch.

But I'm not sure whether I like that.  I think I prefer the spotlight
to cover also the ">" continuation character, because to me it makes
it clearer that the match continues beyond the window's edge.  When
the continuation character has a different color plus background from
the spotlighted text, it makes it seem as if the spotlighted text stops
right before the ">".  So probably I'm going to remove that part of
the patch again.  It would match the behavior in the prompt bar, where
the continuation character is not highlighted specially either.
