Not to take away from Norm's and your point, but I often find GNU grep's
-o option handy as a tokeniser.
$ echo 'foo+bar9/3.14*.42' |
> grep -Eo '[a-z][a-z0-9_]*|[0-9]*\.[0-9]+|[0-9]+|.'
foo
+
bar9
/
3.14
*
.42
$
