mhdraft and all other nmh environment variables are documented in the
mh-profile(5) man page:

   $mhdraft
        This is the path to the working draft.

        This is set by comp, dist, forw, and repl to tell the
        whatnowproc which file to ask “What now?” questions about.

Some form of that has been there since nmh entered CVS in 1999.
