Follow-up Comment #4, bug #30519 (project octave):

Sorry, I had something else on my mind. I should have given more info.

I'd assumed that when a "units",  "fontunits", or "paperunits" property is
changed that Matlab converted the value of the corresponding property.

By compatibility, I meant that the property values should be handled in a
manner consistent with the units property during set/get operations. That can
be done when the units are changed (hence my comments regarding a listener for
the units properties) or for the set/get of the property value (as you've
done).

Both can produce a compatible result ... but your solution looks more
efficient to me.
