Follow-up Comment #18, bug #31468 (project octave):

I've attached a changeset for the stable branch. It works for the gnuplot
backend, but it untested on fltk. This changeset includes Vanya's work.

I have a bit more work to do on the m-file side, but will need some help on
the c/c++ side.

TODOs:

Test using the FLTK OpenGL backend.

Suppress the "missing glyph" warnings from gnuplot. This may be done by
converting the multiline text objects can be split into separate gnuplot text
labels, or we can ask the gnuplot development team to avoid warnings for NL
characters.

Modify the __go_text__() built-in to accept cell-strings.

Minor rewrite of text.m to ensure that string property for text objects has
the same class as the input to text().
