Follow-up Comment #2:

Confirmed.  This is a regression between 3.6.4 and 3.8.0.  This is probably a
pretty easy m-file fix.  I added it to the list of short projects on the
Octave wiki (http://wiki.octave.org/Short_projects#Bugs).
