This is a FAQ:
http://wiki.octave.org/FAQ#I_cannot_install_a_package._Octave_complains_about_a_missing_mkoctfile.

but I must admit that the warnings

ls: cannot access /usr/local/MATLAB: No such file or directory
ls: cannot access /usr/local/MATLAB/R*: No such file or directory
ls: cannot access /usr/local/MATLAB/R*: No such file or directory
...
make: /bin/mexext: Command not found 


are a little bit misleading when building with Octave.
