Follow-up Comment #33, bug #38928 (project octave):
I think what we have is reasonable. These options give the flexibility to
anyone to build Octave with HDF5 in a non-standard location. For Debian users
who choose to self-compile, they only need to throw two extra options into
their configure line. For everyone else, including the Debian users who just
get the binary throug apt-get, nothing else changes. That's not too onerous.
