Follow-up Comment #13:
Thanks to Juan Pablo for confirming, it seems pretty certain now that this
segfault is constrained to systems using the Nvidia proprietary drivers.
It occurred to me that this might have something to do with Nvidia's
replacement OpenGL libraries (for those that haven't experienced Nvidia, it
requires also installing Nvidia's own version of libGL, etc).
Some light searching does yield a few hits on problems with OSMesa and Nvidia.
