Follow-up Comment #11, bug #44959 (project octave):
Patch from comment #10 works fine, nice!
I'd prefer this status bar solution over a tooltip as:
1. it is unobtrusive
2. no extra action needed to display (X,Y)
3. it is the same as in the fltk toolkit.
