Follow-up Comment #1:

Confirmed.  I'm not sure that Octave's copyobj was ever designed with multiple
handles in mind, although that seems completely reasonable from the
documentation.

I expanded copyobj to work on scalar or vectors of handles in this cset
(http://hg.savannah.gnu.org/hgweb/octave/rev/1dda942a2514).  It seems to work
on your example code so I'm going to close the report.
