Follow-up Comment #2, bug #47723 (project octave):
IMHO it is worth making sure that all of autoconf, automake, gettext, and
libtool are built specifically for mxe. This is not just an issue with older
systems, it may recur for newer systems as well. All of these tools have a
generator/m4 file pair, and they all check that the versions match. A future
gettext 0.20 may fail similarly, and so on.
