Ok, thanks, that clears up a bit.

I think it may have been this bug (just by searching the commit log for
suspicious entries)

that was fixed by this commit

in glibc version 2.18.

If this is right, affected systems include Debian 7 ("oldstable" at this
point), Ubuntu 12.04 (ancient LTS at this point), CentOS/RHEL 6 (old stable
RHEL at this point), CentOS/RHEL 7 surprisingly (current stable RHEL), and
your version of LMDE (which I don't know how to check or search for package
lists).

If LMDE is supposed to be based on Debian, I'm surprised that it has older
packages than Debian 8. And I thought it was supposed to roll with Debian
testing, but maybe that has changed.
