Follow-up Comment #6, bug #51436 (project octave):

Actually I think this may be a known bug that has to do with a kernel
regression and the Java runtime.

See for example https://bugs.debian.org/865303 and
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1699772. This bug apparently affects many
user-space programs that embed or launch a Java VM running on certain versions
of the 32-bit Linux kernel.
