offset is in some reasonable range ([-5, +5])."

If it is temporary, for the sake of finding a bug, why not make the assert the
exact range?  If the image is shifted, say one pixel to the left/right or
top/bottom, we'd want to know that.  That would be the likely risk here; some
kine of 0-start versus 1-start indexing.
